Air travel with a laptop computer in tow is its own brand of ... fun. Especially that brief span of time when the thing is out of its bag and on the conveyor belt for X-ray scanning. Wouldn't it be nice if I could somehow keep it in my bag? That's one less thing to try to gather after having cleared the checkpoint, when I'm already occupied just trying to keep my trousers up without a belt...

The TSA has released general guidelines for a bag that would not require people to remove their laptops:

Any takers? Submit a design and prototype, and you could have all kinds of new friends in the travel world...

TheFatPlat booked a ticket this morning on Delta.com. For whatever reason, their website won't let you enter a FF number for any program other than their own (sheesh, and people complain that Microsoft doesn't like competition??). I contacted their support via chat, and this is who I spoke with and how he ended the conversation:

Peter Parker: Thank you for choosing Delta. Keep smiling, have a great time. It was pleasure chatting with you.

Today I checked luggage on a trip to the east coast that was to be followed by a cross-continental trip that same evening. Now, I'm the type of brother who packs only carry-on when flying to Europe for a week. Necessity made me check it today. It's now 11pm on the west coast and I have no idea where my luggage is. Neither does Delta.

Before we talk about us, let's talk about you. Ask yourself a few questions:

- Are you on a first-name basis with airport gate agents? flight attendants? pilots?

- Do hotel concierges ask you where's a good steak joint?

- Do rental car companies have a price special named after you?

- Does your frequent-flyer milage outstrip your salary ... by a decimal place?

If so ... welcome to Travel Hell!

It's hardly news: Travel sucks. Whether you're getting there (planes, trains, automobiles), staying there (hotels), or trying to get the hell out (flight delays), you're getting the short end of the stick.

Sure, the airlines all tout awards of this, customer satisfaction of that, but it's hard to believe when you're in the back of coach next to the loo... delayed for another two hours... and your checked baggage has landed in a nicer locale than you. -and all this after your hotel room was sandwiched between newlywed couples. (or at least people who sounded like newlyweds. Let's not go there.)

Road-weary people, TravelHell.net is for you. It's a place for seasoned veterans to swap stories and explain how the travel industry works. Spectators will hopefully pick up some tips, tricks, and learn that sometimes the airlines, hotels, and rental car companies aren't at fault.

Sometimes.
